Phase 3

Pasig River Project Phase 3

Driven by a vision for a cleaner, more engaging, and accessible riverside environment, the IAC-PRUD has completed Phase 3 of developing portions of Segment 2 in the masterplan, encompassing areas of Intramuros namely : Plaza Mexico, Maestranza and Fort Santiago. This phase aims to improve and rehabilitate these historically significant areas to enhance the cultural vibrancy within Pasig River.

A. Plaza Mexico

Part of the Pasig River Urban Development is the improvement and rehabilitation of the existing plazas along the banks that would transform into community engagement and tourism hubs.  One of the plazas is the Plaza Mexico, which was established in 1964 to commemorate the 4th centenary of the expedition of Miguel López de Legazpi and Andres de Urdaneta from New Spain [ Mexico ] and the historic Manila-Acapulco galleon trade relations between the two nations which lasted 250 years.

The primary objective of this activity is to revitalize the vibrancy of the plaza relative to its historic relevance through the construction of open activity areas and ornamental landscapes that will attract tourists, bikers and pedestrians within the Intramuros area who may traverse the esplanade.

Project Size : Approx. 3,974 sqm

B. Maestranza Esplanade

The Maestranza Esplanade is a designed public space that enhances accessibility and connectivity along the Pasig River. It features a shared pedestrian and bicycle pathway, ensuring a seamless and safe experience for walkers, joggers and cyclists alike. Spanning approximately 240 meters in length and 16 meters wide, the Maestranza Esplanade is supported by durable reinforced concrete pile caps and beams, ensuring structural stability and longevity.

In addition, the esplanade has allocated a 10-meter-wide open activity area to encourage community engagement and cultural enrichment.

This area is highlighted by a gallery wall exhibit that showcases the history and legacy of the Pasig River, complemented by art installations strategically placed throughout the river easement.  It features an open-air gallery with curated historical art installations that narrate the rich heritage of Manila, particularly highlighting the significance of the Maestranza area. The integration of artistic and educational elements enhances the pedestrian experience, harnessing a deeper appreciation for the city’s past, while promoting an active and engaging urban lifestyle.

Project Size : Approx. 3,446 sqm

C. Fort Santiago Riverwalk

The Fort Santiago Riverwalk Rehabilitation Project aims not just to restore but to enhance the historic riverfront promenade along the Pasig River, providing visitors with a scenic and immersive experience that reflects the site’s cultural and historical significance.

The revitalized riverwalk will feature a wider pedestrian-friendly pathway with designated areas for leisurely strolls and cycling, ensuring accessibility for all visitors. Structural improvements, including reinforced walkways, upgraded lighting, and modern safety features, will enhance durability, security and functionality.

Project Size : Approx. 2,514 sqm
